Being a minimalist and living in smaller spaces are in trend right now. As a matter of fact, the great thing is that smaller spaces are easier to clean making clutter easier to deal with. But what if this isn’t the case?
Small spaces require less maintenance but you need a little bit of discipline. Simply because in smaller spaces you cannot buy a lot of things. You need to keep in mind that your space is limited and prone to clutter.
So to avoid this kind of issue in the future, here are 5 decluttering strategies for small spaces.
1. Utilize storage containers – How are you going to store your things? Simply use storage containers! If not, your stuff will be lying around the house causing clutter. Having containers doesn’t mean you have to buy more things so you could store them. Storage containers serve as a tool to organize your things around the house and not storage for more clutter.
2. Make it a habit to organize and clean up 10 – 15 mins everyday – We all have the same 24 hours a day and squeezing a little bit of time 10 – 15 mins a day can help clean up your space. Smaller spaces are the easiest to clean and wouldn’t take the whole day, but if you’re a busy person, 10 – 15 mins of cleaning time would do.
3. Purchase furniture that have hidden storage or extra storage capacity – Having furniture with that option could add storage space. Furniture for smaller spaces can be a little tricky. You need to only buy a few big items and a lot of smaller items to complement your space. There are ottomans that could be used as storage. While some sofa have hidden storage compartments under the seats. Research and look for furniture that would fit perfectly in your small space.
4. Use vertical spaces – Shelves, hooks, racks etc. These are ways you can use your vertical space as added storage to your home. Vertical spaces have often been neglected. Get some ideas on how you can use vertical space in your home by checking Pinterest or other home improvement sites.
5. Do a quarterly purge – Purging must be done to remove stuff that you no longer need. This is much needed for those who live in smaller spaces. Purging at least 3x a year could reduce clutter dramatically around the house. Purging isn’t only applicable for personal belongings but also for food storage around the pantry.
