Have you ever heard of the saying “Less is more”? We acquire so much that in the end it becomes chaos and overwhelming. The more you own things the less practical you’ll be because you want more. In this day and age, a lot of people are considering to have less. The less you have, the less problems. Have you heard about tiny living? Well, it’s becoming a trend now, and people even families are considering to live in a tiny space to stop acquiring more and save a lot of dollars in the process.
So if you’re considering living in smaller space then you need to go through the downsizing process. It can be really stressful, especially if you have been accustomed to living with all your stuff for years, but downsizing can be a liberating process.
So here are the things you need to consider before downsizing.
1. Understand the future floor plan of your living space – The first thing you need to consider before downsizing is the space you will be transferring to. How many square space you have on the new place you’re transferring to. This would determine how much you can bring into the new living space.
2. Keep those things you NEED and USE regularly – On downsizing, a big chunk of it is letting go of furniture, kitchen ware and a lot of personal belongings. Since you’re already aware of the amount of space you’ll have on your new home, you have to think which ones you need in the new living space, consider the uses and the amount of space it takes up.
3. Research about effective storage tricks that is suitable for your living space – When you undergo downsizing, you have to be aware of how much storage space you have for all of the things you own (after you undergo the process of decluttering). There are a lot of ways in utilizing space, you just have to know what storage boxes and design can be used in your new home.
4. Seek professional help – The internet can only provide limited tips and how-to’s. With that being said nothing beats personal consultation with a professional. Downsizing can be really hard but with professional help, you can easily ease you way through the process.
5. Have the right mindset towards downsizing – Just like what I mentioned earlier, it can be stressful especially when you have to let go of a lot of things to make room for more important stuff that you really need. Once you let go of things, you need to discipline yourself and not buy more things you don’t need (aside from necessity). If you have to buy, you have to let go of something.
